Luke shows a cool hand for Tigers

After a stellar performance representing his state at last year’s Country Championships at Wagga, Wells had fast become one of the most sought after big men in the country.

As most football fans know, good ruckmen don’t exactly grow on trees, let alone go on to be named the best in Australia.

Wells had a think, did some research on Albury and thought some more.

He came over for a visit pre Christmas but still wasn’t sure.

To make things harder, Wells had just been appointed Tanunda’s stand alone captain for the upcoming Barossa Light and Gawler Football Association season and had won four premierships at the club, his home club, in five years.

Aside from a summer stint at Palmerston in Darwin, this is where Wells had played all of his football. It was all he knew.

Wells thought about it again, weighed up the pros and cons, before making his decision.

And it was the answer Albury wanted to hear. He was in.

Wells packed his bags, made the 937 kilometre trek from Tanunda to Albury and was living on the Border by the end of January.

Six months on, and the 198 centimetre big man is more than happy with that decision.

“I’m really enjoying it,” Wells said this week.

“The cl Tiffany Canada ub has been really good to me and it’s a good place to live. It was a pretty big decision to make.

“I’d played all my club footy at Tanunda and I had to le Tiffany Canada ave my friends and family and pretty much everything I knew.

“But the Ovens and Murray is strong league.

“I wasn’t getting any younger and I thought I should try it out.”

Wells, 28, has been a revelation for the Tigers over the past few weeks.

He has rarely found himself out of the club’s best players.

Maher sa Tiffany Canada id the All Australian ruckman had been Tiffany Canada everything Albury had wanted and more.

“He’s really added another dimension to our midfield,” he said.

“His ability as a tap ruckman has helped our mids get first hands on the footy and you can really notice that by the way guys like ‘Hydey’, Dean Polo and Charlie Gaylard have played this year.

“Wellsy is really good at finding the footy, too. He’s been great.”

Wells was one of Albury’s best in last Saturday’s thriller against Yarrawonga and will again be relied on to perform against Lavington today.
